MacNeal Family Medicine Residency offers clerkships for third and fourth year students. Interested third year students should check with their medical schools for rotation availability. Fourth year students may participate in four week inpatient or outpatient family medicine rotations.

Student rotations fill early so plan ahead.

Inpatient sub-internship in Family Medicine

Fourth year students may participate in an elective or required sub-internship. Students at Rush Medical School may register for the sub-internship through their school. Other interested students register through MacNeal Family Medicine.

During your sub-internship you will:

  • Become an integral member of the Family Medicine Service at MacNeal Hospital caring for patients under the direction of senior family medicine residents and family physicians
  • Provide continuity care to patients, including admission write-ups, daily progress notes, and communication with consultants and the patient's primary care physician
  • Take call on average every four days.
  • Follow a diverse group of patients
  • Attend the didactic sessions sponsored by MacNeal Hospital and the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Outpatient Family Practice Electives

Outpatient electives at MacNeal Family Practice are available for fourth year medical students only. (Interested third year students should check with their medical schools for family medicine rotation availability.)

Students participating in this elective will work with faculty to design a rotation that fulfills their needs. The elective rotation may include:

  • Patient care with Family Medicine residents and faculty in the MacNeal Family Medicine Clinic
  • Participation in the lecture series, conferences, and teaching rounds sponsored by the Family Medicine Residency Program.
  • House calls and nursing home visits
  • Teen clinic
  • Inpatient services (Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Maternity)
  • Call is optional
